Students in Mrs. Andrews' class participated in the Floating Paper Clip Challenge. The challenge was to cause a paperclip to float by using magnetic force to balance the force of gravity acting on the paperclip. They had previously explored that two forces can act on an object at the same time. Using the given materials students constructed a device to gain experience with the practice of planning investigations. After many different trials, they were all successful in making a paperclip float.

First Grade has been reading about government and laws. Our School Resource Officer, Officer White, visited 1st grade classrooms to talk about how police officers keep people safe by enforcing laws. Students then wrote about what law they think is most important and why!

Throughout the month of October, our school's talented young artists have produced exceptional artwork. By exploring various artistic styles and looking at artworks by several influential figures in art such as Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Tim Burton. Their creativity shined, and created true masterpieces.

Red Ribbon Week 2024 was a BLAST! As you can see from these pictures, our students were amazing participants in bringing awareness to healthy lifestyle choices for the present and for their futures! We'd also like to share a bigTHANK YOU to Mrs. Raheem for connecting MCES with UAMS during Red Ribbon Week! Our 2nd and 3rd grade students had the opportunity to tour an inflatable brain and learn invaluable information that will last a lifetime and we are so thankful for this experience for them!

To foster a love for reading and build friendships, some of our second graders and kindergarten students are teaming up as book buddies! Ms. Fitz & Mrs. Long’s students eagerly read aloud to their younger buddies in Mrs. Pigg & Mrs. Holland’s class, helping to spark imagination and excitement for stories. The kindergartners, in turn, shared their own created books for the week to help build their fluency with high-frequency words. This not only enhances literacy skills but also encourages empathy, patience, and confidence in young readers. We are so excited to build a community of readers at MCES!

Today, our students teamed up to explore maps while rounding to the nearest ten and hundred. This activity integrated their social studies unit, making math come alive through real-world geography! Working together, they sharpened their map-reading skills and learned the importance of collaboration.

As Maumelle Charter is voting to name their new Falcon mascot, Mrs. Chism's class made argumentative posters to convince each other which name is best! Students made a claim (which name they like best) and supported their claim with evidence (their reasoning). The kids had a great time designing their posters and presenting them to the class!

Morningside Bagels from State Farm, Lee Tuxhorn! Thank you!

MCES Flu Clinic- October 31st!

Happy 250th Birthday, Johnny Appleseed!

Mrs. Pigg’s class celebrated Latin American culture by reading stories and listening to music. They went on a shape hunt after reading "Round is a Tortilla" and made tortillas in class using a tortilla press. Bruno shared his family's tortilla press and brought items for Show and Tell, including a soccer jersey, Mexico’s flag, and the book "Pepe and the Parade." The students had a fantastic hands-on experience.

Our September book token winners! These students have shown SELF-CONTROL..."I am in control of my actions, thoughts, and words!"

MCES welcomes Senator English today in honor of "Take Your Legislator to School" month.

Red Ribbon Week, October 14th- 18th! "Life is a Movie, Film Drug Free!

Second-grade students began Experimentals Enrichment by testing how many pencils could puncture a water-filled plastic bag. When a hole is made, some polymer molecules separate, but others hold the bag intact, preventing water from escaping since water droplets are too large to pass through the gaps between the pencils. This experiment sparked curiosity about the effects of using larger bags, thicker pencils, or varying the force applied when inserting the pencils.
